Aliah University Vice-Chancellor Mohammad Ali said on Monday he wanted to resign, a day after a former Kolkata University student was arrested for allegedly abuse and assault him.
A video of the incident had gone viral.
“I don’t feel respected or protected here. I want to go back to my old institute Jadavpur University. I sent a letter to (Vice Chancellor of Jadavpur University) Suranjan Das in this regard. I think I failed as a teacher,” a teary-eyed Ali told the media.
Police arrested Ghiasuddin Mondal, who was expelled from the university in 2018, on Sunday. Police say the incident happened on Friday when Mondal along with about 20 supporters stormed into the vice-chancellor’s room and l assaulted. An alleged video of the incident showing Mondal threatening Ali with dire consequences and abusing him went viral on Saturday. In the alleged video, Mondal is heard threatening to kill Ali, who is sitting in a chair in his office.
A university official said Mondal wanted the VC to revise the list of doctoral candidates and include the names of those he recommended.
“They stayed in the VC room for hours. Before leaving, and threatened to return if the list was not revised. They had allegedly manipulated the list by the university administration,” the official said.
Mondal was convicted under ICC Articles 307 (attempted murder), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter an official from performing his duties), 342 (wrongful confinement), 386 (extortion), 504 (causing a breach of the peace), 120 B (criminal association) among others.
Mondal was also a former district unit chairman of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad – the student wing of the ruling TMC.
University officials said Mondal was expelled from the university in 2018 for allegedly engaging in “unethical activities”.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reacted to the arrest, saying the police had taken action in the case.
“A student had used derogatory language against the Vice-Chancellor of Aliah University. The police took action and the student was arrested,” she said.
