How did the case method enrich your learning? I am someone who learns best by doing. From my perspective, the case method is the best approximation of learning by doing because it forces students to tackle real business problems. I remember going through Ivey’s program for a month and thinking I didn’t get it. Now that I look back, I can see how far I’ve come and how much I’ve learned. The cases selected in each class really fit together like puzzle pieces to create a bigger and more meaningful picture.
Other than classmates and cases, what part of the school’s MBA programming led you to choose this business school and why was it so important to you? The most important factors in choosing Ivey were his reputation in Canada and his alumni network. Early in my MBA admission journey, it became clear to me that Ivey was the best known and most respected program in Canada. I was also blown away by the willingness of alumni to connect with me even before I started the program. I can’t wait to join this incredible network of individuals.
What quality best describes your MBA fellows and why? When I think of my fellow MBA students, the first word that comes to mind is “generousâ€. The Ivey MBA is intense and time is incredibly limited, but I have seen so many of my classmates donate their time and energy to help their peers. From organizing extra help sessions on difficult topics to delivering groceries to quarantined students, my MBA classmates have really gone above and beyond.
Describe your greatest achievement in your career so far: In 2020, I led the license renewal process for the main educational program offered at the private post-secondary institute I worked for. The updated regulatory requirements we were under were incredibly meticulous and required many organizational changes. Along with my team, I updated and revised operating procedures, implemented new student records management software, created an operating budget, redesigned the website, and updated legal contracts where possible. . My organization was successful and we were able to continue to deliver the program which generated more than half of our revenue.
Describe your greatest achievement as an MBA student so far: My biggest achievement as an MBA student so far has been to land one of two executive director positions with the LEADER project. The LEADER project was started by three Western students in 1991 and aims to teach entrepreneurs in emerging economies basic business principles using Ivey’s case method approach. The interview process for the LEADER project was rigorous and it was the first time that I presented a solution to a file request!
What prompted you to pursue an MBA at this point in your career? I had been working as a lawyer for a few years and had moved to a new role with a small, growing private post-secondary institute. Even though I was still doing legal work, I was much more involved in the general management and operations of the business and I absolutely loved it. Over time, I started to feel that there were significant gaps in my knowledge and skills and decided to pursue an MBA to fill these gaps and challenge myself.
What other MBA programs have you applied to? Nothing!
What did you do during the application process that got you accepted to Ivey? Other than really knowing my story, I think the most important thing I did was be myself. Ivey really looks at the set and values ​​authenticity and fit. By being myself, not only was Ivey able to assess my fit, but I was also able to assess whether Ivey was a good fit for me.
