School
The successful candidate will be based at the Pacific School of Arts, Communication and Education (SPACE) which houses the disciplines of Literature, Academic English, Pacific Studies, Linguistics, Language, education and journalism. SPACE also offers programs in the vernacular languages ââof the South Pacific and is home to the Confucius Institute and the Oceania Center for Pacific Arts, Culture and Studies. SPACE encourages collegiality and invests in the culture of a dynamic scholarly community. This is one of the more research-oriented schools in the university, a trend that SPACE invites the successful candidate to continue.
The opportunity
SPACE seeks to nominate a motivated, experienced and talented individual who can make a significant contribution to research and teaching in the training of primary and secondary teachers, specializing in language and literacy. The successful candidate will be an active member of the school’s vibrant research culture and contribute to teaching, course development and supervision at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The candidate will also be able to undertake administrative tasks related to his position. The successful candidate will be located at the Laucala campus in Fiji, although there may be opportunities to offer short-term flexible schools at other campuses in the region.
The person we are looking for
To be considered at the teacher level, the candidate (s) must have:
- A PhD in English or Education (with formal training in ESL and literacy) with relevant higher education and / or research experience; Where
- In exceptional cases, a master’s degree or professional qualification with relevant teaching experience or relevant sectoral / professional experience or a significant research profile;
- An established record of successful teaching and course development at primary, secondary and / or tertiary levels;
- Some publications in peer-reviewed journals and books and evidence of attendance at seminars and conferences;
- Teaching experience in a second language context where English is the language of instruction;
- Good understanding of the complexities of “English” subject matter in contexts where English is simultaneously acquired as a second language and used as a medium of instruction throughout much of the program;
- Good understanding of the complexities of literacy acquisition and development in multilingual contexts; and
- Demonstrated expertise in at least one of the following areas: English proficiency for English teachers, language awareness for teachers, bilingual education, mainstream ESL, gender and process approaches to writing, literature in ESL class or theories and reading process.

- In exceptional cases, a master’s degree or professional qualification with relevant teaching experience or relevant sectoral / professional experience or a significant research profile;
- Excellent record of research publications in peer-reviewed journals and books and proof of attendance at seminars and conferences;
- A record of demonstrable academic and professional achievement and leadership in the relevant discipline;
- An established record of successful teaching and course development at primary, secondary and / or tertiary levels;
- Teaching experience in a second language context where English is the language of instruction;
- Good understanding of the complexities of “English” subject matter in contexts where English is simultaneously acquired as a second language and used as a medium of instruction throughout much of the program;
- Good understanding of the complexities of literacy acquisition and development in multilingual contexts; and
- Demonstrated expertise in at least one of the following areas: English proficiency for English teachers, language awareness for teachers, bilingual education, mainstream ESL, gender and process approaches to writing, literature in ESL class or theories and reading process.
Preference will be given to applicants who have:
- Experience in developing course materials for distance and flexible learning;
- Teaching experience in developing countries, including the Pacific;
- Good knowledge of the very different language education policies implemented in the twelve member countries of the USP region;
- Substantial understanding of language and literacy issues as it relates to teachers who are themselves speakers of English as a second language; and
- Graduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCTT) or equivalent.
Remuneration
The position is available for a period of 5 years and can be renewed by mutual agreement.
Wage scale: Lecturer – FJ $ 73,689 to FJ $ 96,958 per year;
Senior Lecturer – FJ $ 99,971 to FJ $ 115,351 per year;
