How To Install IntelliJ IDEA on Ubuntu 22.04 | 20.04 LTS

The IntelliJ development environment is a popular IDE among Java developers. The retail version costs around $49.90 per month – while the community edition with some limited features is completely free.

Compared to the free Eclipse alternative, IntelliJ convinces with a nice and modern interface. Anyone who has ever worked with an IDE will quickly find their way here.

IntelliJ is perfect for developing Java, Kotlin, Groovy, Scala, and Android programs. The integration of Git, SVN, Mercurial and CVS is also very convenient.

Steps to Install IntelliJ IDEA on Ubuntu 20.04 | 22.04 LTS

Here we are installing the community edition of IntelliJ IDEA on Ubuntu, however, the steps given will be the same for other Debian-based Linux systems such as Linux Mint, POP OS, Elementary OS, etc.

1. Requirements

To complete the steps in this tutorial, the user has at least the following:

Minimum – 2 GB of free RAM
Multi-core processor for faster performance
Disk space: 2.5 GB and additional 1 GB for caches
Monitor resolution – 1024×768 or 1920×1080
Linux Ubuntu
A non-root sudo user
Active internet connection

2. Download IntelliJ IDEA

IntelliJ IDEA is not available to be installed via Linux’s default system repository, so we have to download its installation script manually from its official site. Visit the aforementioned link and save the file.

Once you have the file on your system, open the command terminal, for that you can use Ctrl+Alt+T. After that, go to Downloads because everything we download from the browser goes there by default.

cd Downloads

Now extract the downloaded compressed file in Tar format.

sudo tar -xzf ideaIC-*.tar.gz

Move the extracted folder to the opt directory so you don’t accidentally delete it.

sudo mv idea-IC* /opt/idea

4. Install IntelliJ IDEA on Ubuntu 22.04 | 20.04

Well, IntelliJ IDEA doesn’t need to be installed like other regular apps, we just need to run the script file called “” available in the extracted folder to run it.

So switch to the extracted folder:

cd /opt/idea/bin

5. Create Desktop Shortcut

To take the hassle out of changing and starting IntelliJ IDEA from its folder, let’s create a desktop shortcut and command terminal entry for it.

Run IntelliJ IDEA using its launch script mentioned in the previous step. After that click on New project with the programming language you want.

Once the project is created, go to Tools and select the “Create an office entrance” to create a desktop shortcut or launcher entry for IntelliJ IDEA, and if you want to start the IDE from any command terminal, select “Create a command line launcher”.

6. How to update or upgrade IntelliJ IDEA

We can update the IDE without downloading its file again. For that just run this coding app and select the “to help” menu option. Go for “Check for updates“, this will automatically inform and ask your permission to install any latest version available.

7. Uninstall or remove it from Ubuntu 22.04 | 20.04

In the future, if you no longer need IntelliJ IDEA on your Ubuntu system, we can remove it by simply deleting its folder and other entries.

sudo rm -r /opt/idea
sudo rm -r ~/.config/JetBrains
sudo rm /usr/share/applications/jetbrains-idea-ce.desktop
